Musicians

Performed by NYU percussion department students

Project type

Live Percussion Ensemble

An exploration of the different tones created by unpitched percussion instruments through tools such as change of mallets and striking spots. Camp utilizes 6 drummers spread among the bass drum, quad toms, snare drum, hi-hat, woodblocks, cowbell, maracas, and vibraphone. With a soundscape inspired by the wall of sound created in the Brazilian Carnaval drums of my childhood, the opening uses the soundscape to develop a loud, clumsy march that devolves into a timid, apprehensive pitched melody. From here a stricter march develops for a brief moment, before ultimately returning back to the overly complicated awkwardness - in all, creating the image of toddler charading adulthood through a summer camp.
